Snowdrop (Rare)
Snowdrops, that have inspired many artists because of their beautiful appearance, comprise a group of flowers that is also very striking from a botanical perspective. All species in the genus Galanthus are known as snowdrops in Turkey. G. elwesii is the best known among these and it is one of our rare species even though it is not endemic. It adds a different colour to the highland pastures of Antalya with its incredible beauty. Snowdrop buds are collected in our province especially at the Akseki and İbradı regions in accordance with a pre-determined quota, and they comprise a significant proportion of the geophyte exports of Turkey. Festivals are organized every year at İbradı District in its name. G. elwesii bulbs have a diameter of about 3 cm and are spherical. Their leaves are narrowly oblanceolate and they develop rapidly during the fruiting period. The flowers are white coloured and drooping down. This species, which prefers rocky areas and woodlands, can distribute up to an altitude of about 1800 m.
